The words we use after someone discloses trauma matter.
Survivors do not need to be questioned, blamed, or pressured to heal on someone else’s timeline. They need to feel believed, respected, and supported.
Instead of asking, “Why didn’t you leave?” we can ask, “What made it difficult or unsafe to leave?”
Instead of asking, “Why didn’t you report it?” we can remind them, “You get to decide what happens next.”
A trauma-informed response does not require having all the answers. Sometimes, it begins with four simple words:
“I believe you.”
Our response can become another source of harm—or the first step toward healing. Let’s choose our words carefully.
