For so long, I let them decide for me.
Them — the faceless crowd with opinions louder than their truths.
Them — the ones who whispered what I “should” be, how I “should” act, what I “should” look like, grieve like, heal like, live like.
And for a while, I listened. I shrank. I twisted myself into a version they’d accept — quiet enough not to stir, strong enough not to break, polished sufficient to hide the pain. It was exhausting.
But here’s the thing: They don’t get to decide anymore.
They don’t carry my story. They don’t wipe my tears. They don’t wake up to my battles or hold my babies when I’m too tired to stand. They definitely don’t pay my bills.
They’ve never lived my truth, so why did I ever give them the mic?
Let them talk.
Let them judge.
Let them misunderstand.
Let them stay exactly where they are — on the sidelines — while I take my damn life back.
They’ve got their dark secrets they’re not brave enough to speak out loud. And that’s on them. I’m done hiding. I’m done dimming. I’m done letting “them” write my narrative.
From now on, I choose me. Loudly. Boldly. Imperfectly.
Because letting them go?
That’s where the freedom lives.
